Something has to give: When writing becomes the focus

I know it’s been a minute since I posted on my blog. When I initially decided to create a blog, my goal was to write something every two weeks or so. Then I stretched that out to about a month between posts. And now I’m here, realizing that I haven’t posted on here since February. Funny how that happens.

I promise it’s not for a lack of topics. There’s never a shortage of things to write about. It’s all about priorities, and I’m (still) learning everything that comes with being an author.
I’m not the first and I won’t be the last to admit that being an author is a full-time commitment. It comes with an abundance of responsibilities, such as writing, editing, reading, marketing, social media, and correspondence (event coordinators, influencers, other authors, readers, etc.).
This would be a lot to keep track of on its own. Throw in other life responsibilities, including a separate full-time job, and it can easily get overwhelming. It’s a true balancing act, one prone to going off kilter.
While I wish I could maintain a better presence on my blog, the truth is that it’s not as pressing of a priority. Even if I had a readership that rivaled (insert your favorite author here), it would still take a backseat to other obligations.
It’s not that this blog isn’t important. I enjoy making contributions to it when I can. Currently, however, my focus has shifted to my next writing project.
I won’t announce it outright in print just yet, but if you’ve been following me long enough or have caught me on the author circuit or have a friendship with me, then it will be easy to figure it out. This writing project has challenged me in new ways and has eaten up my bandwidth. Because tone can be hard to decipher in text, I promise this isn’t a complaint. Quite the opposite. Whenever I sit down to work on this project, my body lights up. It’s the kind of sensation that makes it obvious you’re doing something you love.

But like anything you love, it requires time and commitment, and as much as I’d like to think the rules of being human don’t apply to me, they do. So many things vie for my time on the creative side of my life alone. If I want to make the strides on this project at a rate I’m comfortable with, then some things have to give.
As such, my priority list starts with writing for the aforementioned project, followed by any promotional efforts for Legend Has It (social media posts, events, conversations, collaborations, and so forth). While I'm summarizing those marketing-related endeavors, I promise that doing just those things can devour a day. Again, no complaints. It all serves a purpose.
Truthfully, I felt like I was letting those who read my blog down. Even though it's a sparse audience (for now), I still appreciate anyone who takes the time to read my work in whatever form it takes. I'll still find time to post more blog entries when I can. Perhaps it'll be two weeks from now or two months.
But if I seem quiet on the blog front, don't be alarmed. I'm usually working on something special. And if you don't know what my current project is, there's a small hint in the photos of this post.
